Farewell to a Friend, and the Call to be Different

The new pot or should I say the new friend.

The new pot or should I say the new friend.

Last week, I made a life changing decision.  I decided to get a new coffee pot.  My old coffee pot had been struggling for awhile.  The automatic brew did not work anymore, it was taking longer to brew a pot (yes, I did clean it out), and grinds kept getting into the pot.  It was time for change.  The pot had given me more than six years of reliable service, but it was time for an upgrade.

As Christians we called to grow spiritually.  We are to be learning how to be more like Christ.  When we grow spiritually we look different, we act differently, and we have to leave somethings behind.  The goal of every Christian is to grow closer to God.  When we come to Christ; we are not made perfect right away, but we are set on the right path to be more like Christ.

So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.  Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. I Peter 2:1-3 ESV

We are like infants when we first become Christians.  We are called to crave “spiritual milk.”  Without it we cannot grow as Christians and become more like Christ. As Christians we are called to act different as well.  Peter says we are to put away malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander.  This means we are to talk better.  We should be honest with people, and we should not use our words to harm them.  We are to live more genuine lives.  We need to be honest about who we are, and avoid being fake in order to impress others.  We are to lift up others, and not bring them down.  We need to cut out gossip and slander, while only saying kind things about others.

The best list in the Bible that shows us how to live is the fruits of the Spirit.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

These are ways we are called to live.  Following the Fruits of the Spirit allows us to be more like Christ.
